VAT number
The tax number with an SI prefix, held by a business identified for VAT purposes.
The Slovenian Financial Administration assigns a tax number to every taxable person. Only a business identified for VAT purposes gets a VAT number — the tax number with an SI prefix. Identification is compulsory once taxable turnover over the last twelve months passes the statutory threshold, and voluntary below it.
A VAT number can be checked in the European Commission's VIES system, which answers for the whole EU. Checking the number on a new partner's invoice is a routine step: an invalid one can cause problems when deducting input VAT.
The authority can also withdraw an identification ex officio. Withdrawals are published, and they are one of the most concrete risk signals readable free from public data.
